If you’ve just bought an EV — or you’re about to — one of the first things to sort out is a Level 2 home charger. Plugging into a regular outlet works, but it’s painfully slow. A Level 2 charger will fully charge most EVs overnight. Here’s what installation actually costs in BC in 2026.
The Short Answer
Most residential Level 2 EV charger installations in BC cost between $800 and $1,500 all-in. This includes the permit and the BC Safety Authority inspection.
If your electrical panel needs upgrading first (common in homes built before 1990), add another $2,000–$4,000.
Cost Breakdown
| What’s included | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Level 2 charger installation (panel ready) | $800–$1,200 |
| Permit + BC Safety inspection | Included |
| Charger unit (if purchasing through us) | $400–$800 |
| Panel upgrade (if needed) | $2,000–$4,000 |
| Outdoor/weatherproof installation | +$100–$300 |
What Affects the Price?
Your existing panel capacity
If your home has a 100-amp panel, it may need upgrading to 200 amps before an EV charger can be added. This is the most common surprise homeowners face in BC. A licensed electrician assesses this during the site visit — we do this for free.
Distance from panel to charger location
The further the charger is from your electrical panel, the more wire and conduit is needed. A garage directly adjacent to the panel is the easiest and cheapest scenario. A carport on the other side of the house adds complexity.
Outdoor vs indoor installation
Outdoor installations require weatherproof conduit and fittings, which adds a small amount to the cost.
Charger brand
Charger brands range from about $400 (basic ChargePoint or Bosch units) to $800+ (Tesla Wall Connector, premium JuiceBox). Installation labour is roughly the same regardless of brand.
Does BC Have Rebates for EV Charger Installation?
Yes. BC Hydro has offered rebates for eligible residential EV charger installations. Programs change periodically — ask your installer or check BC Hydro’s website for current rebate amounts. A licensed installer can help you apply.
Do You Need a Permit?
Yes. In BC, a 240V electrical permit is required for Level 2 EV charger installation. A licensed electrical contractor applies for this permit on your behalf — you don’t need to contact the city or BC Safety Authority. The permit and inspection are typically included in your installation quote.
Level 1 vs Level 2 — Is the Upgrade Worth It?
Level 1 (standard 120V outlet): Adds 6–8 km of range per hour. Fine for plug-in hybrids or very low-mileage drivers.
Level 2 (240V, what we install): Adds 30–50 km of range per hour. Most people fully charge overnight.
If you drive more than 40 km a day, Level 2 is worth every dollar. It also adds value to your home.
